Curating a proper winter capsule wardrobe takes time, especially if you’re building it using second-hand and sustainable pieces. Pinpointing precisely which items of clothing you want to wear during the colder months isn’t an easy thing to do.
Although mine used to be workwear oriented a few years ago, it has now changed radically due to pandemic-related lifestyle changes. I’ve replaced my smart wool trousers and fitted dresses for more casual – and colourful – attire. For example, I’m obsessed with statement ankle boots, velvet, anything burgundy and eye-catching materials – and create outfits around these elements.
How to curate a winter capsule wardrobe?
When it comes to curating a functional and versatile winter capsule wardrobe, I really believe in the no size fits all approach. It will be easier if you like neutral colours and timeless fits, which is what you tend to see everywhere on the internet these days. However, if like me, you like outfits with a bit more going on, I’d say take your time.
A capsule wardrobe should suit your daily activities, personal taste and preferences primarily, rather than follow a ready-made staple checklist someone else came up with. Before buying, you can start by decluttering your wardrobe the sustainable way, then figuring out your own personal style. Shop or thrift anything that’s missing, if you need to buy anything at all. As always, the most sustainable practice is to wear the clothes you already own.
The best basic winter staples
Versatile boots and cosy knit
For me, two absolute must-have items for the colder months are a sturdy pair of super versatile ankle boots and cosy knitwear to keep me warm in style. London had some amazing bright and sunny days last week and I took this quite rare opportunity to shoot this outfit, which combines both.
I received both boots and jumper as Christmas gifts from my fam. I styled them with other key elements a winter look needs in order to be both warm and practical in my opinion – a mini skirt and a cool bag. The skirt comes from a Claudie Pierlot outlet and the Stella McCartney Falabella bag is a Vestiaire Collective find.
Styling cold season essentials
The jumper is from French brand, Sézane, and I chose it myself. Red being one of my favourite colours, I knew this particular knit would be a great addition to my winter capsule wardrobe. The material is soft and fluffy. I have sensitive skin and avoid wearing wool directly on my skin in general. Here, I layered a cotton long-sleeves t-shirt from Topshop I thrifted on Vinted underneath. That’s a good tip if you suffer from sensitive skin too.
I love a good pair of boots and after trying many, many, versions in the past decade, I came to the conclusion that laced-up ones are the best fit for me. It’s not the most practical, but I noticed that other types of winter footwear tend to get less wear. These ones are black vegan Doc Martens and, given how much I wear them already, they’re clearly the ultimate winter staple.
