Finding the perfect outfit to wear to a wedding is like tiptoeing through a fashion minefield. I’m aiming for that elusive balance between show-stopping style and understated elegance, without crossing into bridesmaid territory or, heaven forbid, rivalling the bride. Black, my go-to for virtually any other event, is pretty much off-limits, leaving me scrambling around an Olympic-size pool of colour and print choices. I also want to invest in a piece that I can wear more than once, but at the same time, don’t want to look like I haven’t made enough effort by picking a dress that’s too casual (linen, I’m looking at you).
Then, there are the sustainability considerations. Polyester is the name of the game in ‘occasionwear’. It’s my least favourite material in general except in this category where I make an exception if the look and feel of the dress is right. I also love silk (despite the tedious aftercare), Lenzing EcoVero, cupro, a mix of linen and cotton, or tencel for these types of pieces. The selection below features primarily clothing made with these alternatives to polyester.
In addition to the location and weather, the vibe of the wedding is also part of the shopping equation. Is it a breezy garden party or a lavish, palatial, soirée? I try to approach every one of these wedding outfit hunts with a collector’s mind. I know I won’t be wearing these pieces very often (especially the floor length gowns) so I want them to be memorable, then perhaps live on through resale or rental.
This summer I’ll be travelling to Europe, attending a wedding towards the end of my trip. I must pack a very streamlined suitcase filled with clothes I can wear in multiple ways, including my guest outfit(s). Below are some options I’ve pre-selected as potential contenders and thrifting inspiration for my next Vestiaire browse. They all fit the bill whilst being true to my style. The list is predominantly made up of dresses because that’s what I prefer to wear and find easier to accessorise, but these brands have other styles that could work for you.
